UNIVERSITY SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS (small pitch football) in Salzburg
Seven USI´s from all corners of austria fought for the championship title
The finest ball magic in Salzburg was the order of the day on the Solstice weekend 2024, with perfect football weather. Five women's and seven men's teams from the USI campuses in Vienna, Graz, Leoben, Klagenfurt, Linz, Innsbruck and Salzburg met at the University & Provincial Sports Centre (ULSZ) in Rif to compete for the coveted Unisport Austria Champion trophy.
The match was played on a small-sided football pitch with 6 outfield players and 1 goalkeeper, with 3 substitutes allowed per team according to the rules and a playing time of 20 minutes per match.
In both the women's and men's competitions, all teams played against each other once in the preliminary round. In the final round, the 4 best teams then played the semi-finals, the match for third place and the final. In addition, there was a relegation match between the women's preliminary round and the final round, in which the fifth and fourth-placed teams competed for a place in the semi-finals.
In the women's final, the USI Graz 1 team prevailed against the USI Vienna team in a penalty shoot-out. Third place went to Innsbruck ahead of Graz 2, while fifth place went to the Salzburg women's team.
In the men's final, Linz beat Salzburg 1:0, with Graz taking third place ahead of Vienna. The other places: Innsbruck (5th), Klagenfurt (6th), Leoben (7th)
We would like to thank the team from the ULSZ Rif for the great cooperation in the preparation and realisation, the team from Deck 12 for the culinary delights, the referees from the Salzburg Football Association for the professional match management, the Salzburg Red Cross for the medical support and Johannes Kopf for the fantastic pictures.
Small Field Soccer Tournament /// SS2024
Victory for "Montana Kebap Yallashoot"
In this year's summer semester, 8 teams once again did the honours and competed over 3 days for the title of Leoben Academic Champion.
In Group A, consisting of the teams VDSt Leoben, Montana Kebap Yallashoot, FC Caterpillarshrub and FC Upcycling United, there were no big surprises when it came to advancing to the final.
In the fiercely contested Group B (Running Dads, Lions d'Atlas, Käfig Club Aydin & AS Pirin), the teams Lions d'Atlas and AS Pirin qualified for the final.
As the lucky loser aka best third, VDSt qualified for the last ticket to the final with 4 points from the preliminary round.
The final group was therefore: Montana Kebap Yallashoot, Lions d'Atlas, FC Caterpillarshrub, AS Pirin & VDSt Leoben
At the end of the day, the team ‘Montana Kebap Yallashoot’ was finally able to claim the title, relegating ‘Lions d'Atlas’ to second place and the favourites ‘FC Caterpillarshrub’ to third place.
The USI would like to thank all the players, referee Walter Kopper and our colleagues from Tivoli Leoben for a fantastic three days of tournament action!
We are already looking forward to next year!
All austrian USI´s fought for the title
Every year... the best beach volleyball players from the Austrian universities meet in Klagenfurt and compete for the title at the Unisport Austria Championships (UAM). For the first time this year, the colleagues from USI Klagenfurt managed to attract teams from all USIs to the sand. A total of 32 teams from 8 USI's (Vienna, Graz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Krems & Leoben) competed on 29+30 May 2024.
The Montanuni Leoben was represented by our graduate Verena Melcher and her partner Martina König, but unfortunately they were unable to compete for victory. Nevertheless, the titles went to Styria. A team from USI Graz took first place in both the women's and men's categories.
We would like to thank the organisers from Klagenfurt and all participants for a successful tournament and look forward to next year!

Report and results
On Wednesday, 13 March 2024, 19 chess enthusiasts met to crown the University of Leoben's speed chess champion. This year's venue was once again the lecture theatre for mechanical engineering, which is ideally suited for this. In each game, both players had 20 minutes to think. This is what characterises rapid chess: you have to mate your opponent's king in the time available, otherwise the game would be lost.
The University Sports Institute once again supported the participants by providing drinks as well as Uni Sport medals and other prizes. Richard Mocnik from the USI characterised the event with his friendly welcome at the beginning.
The favourite of the tournament prevailed after more than three hours of play. Dr Georg Reiss won his first four games and could afford to concede a draw in the final round against DI Eliza Truszkiewicz. He thus won his first unit title in chess! Although the tournament's only chess amazon had to cope with a defeat in the first round, she fought her way back to the top of the field at the end and made it onto the podium with a draw against the tournament winner. The performance of Bartosz Sobolewski from the Department of Mathematics was surprising, as he won four games and only suffered one defeat against the tournament winner. This means a silver medal for him
The Montanuniversität tournament is also available on the largest results server in the chess world - Chess-Results.com. The results of the rounds can be viewed at any time under the link...
For all those who like to play chess regularly, there is not only the Internet with its numerous game forums, but also the Leoben Gösser Bräu. The Leoben Chess Club meets here every Thursday from 6.30 p.m. and games can be played informally against partners of different levels.

Kobenz/Hoftal am 31.1.2024
Great sport was offered by a record field of 30 cross-country skiers. The short, crisp circuit in Kobenz/Hoftal was perfectly prepared by the UNSC.
On the 1.2km, all skating techniques were in demand.
Christian Hackenberg and local hero Bianca Hochfelner were the fastest to complete the 10 and 8 laps respectively. In the AK1 category, Achim Wippel came out on top in an exciting 3-way duel, while in the AK2 category, USI director Bernd Tauderer was able to fly the flag for the University of Leoben!
Many thanks to all the athletes for coming and to all the helpers for helping to organise this great event.
A new edition will certainly take place again in the last week of January 2025...#skateon
STOCK HEIL!
USI Ice Curling Tournament was a full success!
This year was the 50th time that students, employees and alumnis met on the ice for the annual ice curling tournament of the university!
On two days, up to 88 ice stocks were gliding through the Leobener ice rink and besides a lot of fun, also a new champ was the result.
The team "K1-MET" ended up on top of all 44 teams and has beaten the boys from team "In ana 1/4 Stund auf Bahn 3" in a close final. Therefor they secured their strong second place from the year before.
In the small final for third place, last years winner "MCL" held on for the last spot on the podium by beating the suprise team of the day "Zornstein 1".
We want to say thanks to all participants and supporters and we are looking forward to see all of you next year!
Stock Heil, your USI!
The reace for the fastest time on the segment "USI Mile" is over
From October 9 to November 19, the USI was looking for the fastest runners over the 1.6 km distance.... and we found them.
On the specially created and signposted USI Mile, the runners ran diligently and achieved top times on the asphalt.
Pia Lizlbauer took the lead in the women's race, 6 and 15 seconds ahead of Linda Kostolanska and Timna Gschwandl respectively.
In the men's race, there was an exciting back-and-forth for the podium places towards the end. A "newcomer" to the MUL, Gustav Greiner, was able to take first place unchallenged. With his background in orienteering, he completed the mile in a strong 5 minutes and 12 seconds. He was followed by Konrad Geyr in 2nd place with 05:21 and Lukas Bauer in 3rd place with 05:25.
We congratulate all participants and will be in touch with the fastest soon.
On the weekend of October 21 and 22, the Unisport Austria Championships in Basketball 3x3 took place in Vienna for the first time. There, our team from the University of Leoben (Suleiman Khusnutdinov, Damian Pasiecznik, Samuel Ringhofer and Karlo Blažević) fought against teams from the University of Vienna, Innsbruck, Salzburg and Linz for the coveted title of "Austrian University Champion"!
In their role as underdogs, the Montanuni team surprised many and fought their way to the final in a bunch of extremely close and physically demanding games.
In the final, however, they were defeated by the men of the University of Innsbruck (USI Avalanches).
The second place and the silver medal shines even more when you consider that many of the teams playing there are active in their own UNI sports league (Austrian College Sports League).
The last place on the podium was secured by the Tigers of the Vienna University of Economics and Business, who defeated the second team of the University of Innsbruck in the small final.
We congratulate our men around our team captain Suli and thank the colleagues of the USI Vienna and Unisport Austria for the great organization!

Erzberg Run + Hubiman Supersprint triathlon
Erzberg Run + Hubiman Supersprint Triathlon
At the end of the academic competition season, the weekend around July 22 and 23 was all about endurance sports. With two events "back to back", the Erzberg Run and the Hubiman Triathlon took place on Saturday and Sunday in the region of Leoben.
ERZBERG RUN:
The course of the unique running event at the Styrian Erzberg is about 13 kilometers with a proud altitude of 758 meters. For the 21st time the "Styrian bread loaf" lured the runners behind the Präbichl to the starting line and they were not disappointed. With relatively little mud and pleasant temperatures, the athletes fought their way up the so-called "terraces". One of the highlights of the event is the tunnel system "Zentrum am Berg" of the University of Leoben, which is about 1.2 km long and provides a welcome cooling in the hot temperatures.
From a sportive point of view Johanna Ganglbauer (W. Allg. Klasse [TU Graz]), Birgit Knoll (W. AK-II [MUL]), Christoph Wendner (M. Allg. Klasse [KFU]), Andreas Potocar (M. AK-I [TU Graz]) and Josef Markus Saurer (M. AK-II [TU Graz]) can be happy about the title of the Styrian Academic Champion.

HUBIMAN TRIATHLON:
The next day the group of multisport athletes met at the 'Zechnerteich' for the second edition of the Hubiman Triathlon over the super sprint distance. In bright sunshine 500m swimming, 14.5km on the bike and 3km running had to be covered. So if you want to determine your maximum pulse or like to bathe in lactate, this is exactly the right place!
After a short but crisp swim, the bike course led away from the recreational area of the Zechnerteich in the direction of Kleinlobming. Here AERO was in demand! Because the headwind, which made its way down from the Gaberl was not from bad parents! After a short pit stop in the transition area, where the cycling shoes were exchanged for the running shoes, it went on the 3 km "long" commute, where the first half slightly sloping invited to accelerate. In return, however, this meant that the second half was permanently slightly uphill, which gave the well-preloaded legs the final rest!
At the end of the day Alice Riebler (W. Allg. Klasse [KFU]), Edwina Kiefer *at her triathlon premiere* (W. AK-I [KFU]) and Schrettner Susanne (W. AK-II) could be happy about the title of the academic champions.
In the men's race, Juan Cardenas-Velasco from Colombia (M. Allg. Class [MUL]), Christian Gruber (M. AK-I [MUL]) and Robert Salzinger (M. AK-II) secured this title.

The USI Leoben and the USI Graz congratulate all winners for their outstanding achievements!
Furthermore we would like to thank the organizers for the successful events and we are already looking forward to the next summer semester 2024!
Every year, the USI invites to the small field soccer tournament and thus also to the Leoben Academic Championships in this discipline.
In the summer semester 2023, 8 teams followed this call and kicked on 3 days distributed around the victory. After the preliminary round in two groups (Mon+Tues), the best 5 teams were allowed to prove their skills again on Thursday on the lawn of the Tivoli Leoben and fight for points in an "everyone against everyone" mode.
Under the eyes of our referee Walter Kopper, many attractive games and a great atmosphere developed at the Tivoli. Despite the noticeable ambition of the players, we are especially pleased that fair play did not fall by the wayside and there was hardly a bad foul to be whistled.
At the end of the day, the team "FC Caterpillarshrub" was able to defend its title from last year (7th points) and thus take home the cup. Only one point behind (6. points) the team "Yalla Shoot" won the highly deserved second place. The podium was rounded off by the "Running Dads" with 4 points, who were the only team to leave the tournament undefeated.
Behind them, "Käfig Klub Aydin" and "RB IZW" lined up in fourth and fifth place with three points each.
The USI would like to thank all players, referee Walter Kopper and the colleagues from Tivoli Leoben for the great three tournament days!

Leoben Academic Competition SPIKEBALL
Results and report
On May 24, the Academic Spikeball Championships of the summer semester 2023 took place in the sports hall in downtown Leoben. The tournament, which was originally planned as an outdoor event, had to be moved indoors at short notice due to the weather. Nevertheless, 9 teams did the honors and played/fought for the championship title. In the preliminary round, which was played in 3 groups of 3 teams, the defending champions aka "Jakob Quadrat" (Jakob Domberger & Jakob Kiendsperger) came out on top. Followed by no other team than "No No Hit Zone", which consisted of Coach Paul Domberger and Felix Reithofer. So it was ranked according to the results of the group phase into the knockout phase, in which each team still had the chance to enter the final.
In the end, the team Forstinger/Pintarich (who had survived the knockout phase as two times lucky losers) won the bronze medal in a match for third place that could hardly be surpassed in terms of commitment. The ungrateful fourth place went to "Spike di ned au" (Linda Schatz + Lukas Skerbisch).
In the grand final it really came down to the anticipated top (brothers) duel. Thus, besides our course instructor, there were also 3 players on the court, who had competed a good week before at the University State Championships in Linz. In a match at the highest level, the defending champions stayed cool and Jakob Quadrat won the title of Leoben Academic Champion again in 3 sets!
1st place: Jakob Quadrat (Jakob Domberger + Jakob Kiendlsperger)
2nd place: No No Hit Zone (Paul Domberger + Felix Reithofer)
3rd place: Franziska Forstinger + Paul Pintarich
The USI wants to say thanks to all participants and congrats all the winners of the day!
Leoben Academic Competition Chess
Results and report
The title match for the European Chess Champion has just ended in Serbia, with an Austrian taking an excellent place among the top 10, an absolute rarity for an Austrian in this sport. In Leoben itself, too, pieces are eagerly moved on the 64 squares, and not only in the Leoben Chess Club.
On Tuesday, 14 March 2023, 17 chess enthusiasts met to choose the university champion in rapid chess. The venue was the lecture hall for mechanical engineering for the first time. After the breaks of 2020/2021/2022, the thirteenth edition of this competition took place. According to an ingenious system, which takes into account the players with equal points after each round, taking into account the colours (whether white or black pieces) of the last rounds, there was the draw, as is the case in the major tournaments worldwide. A total of five rounds were completed. The mental blades were crossed for over 3½ hours before the final result was decided. In each game, both players had 20 minutes to think about the game. Rapid chess is characterised by the fact that the opponent's king must be mated in the time available, otherwise the game would be lost.
The favourite of the tournament was then also the winner. In chess, constant training, but also experience, are the two important factors. Dr. Gerd Mitter was able to win the title for the third time, he only gave up a draw in the final round and won his other four games safely. There was a fierce battle for the other places. Silver and bronze were decided in a blitz game, a so-called Armageddon game. In this game, White has the mortgage of winning, but in return he has five minutes of thinking time at his disposal, while Black has to make do with four minutes. Christian Baumann won this game and came second, while the defeated Alexander schein was able to console himself with third place.
There were small and large successes for all participants. Numerous combinations were well recognised, but overlooked on the other side, which also resulted in surprising game outcomes. At the end, already after 9.30 pm, five prizes provided by our USI were awarded at the award ceremony.
The tournament of the University of Leoben is also available on the largest results server in the chess world - Chess-Results.com - a truly world-renowned top product from Austria. The results of the rounds can be viewed at any time under the link Chess tournament results server Chess-results.com - Leobner Akademische Meisterschaft Schnellschach 2023.
For all those who like to play chess on a regular basis, the Leoben Gösser Bräu is available in addition to the internet with its numerous game forums. The Leoben Chess Club meets here every Thursday from 6.30 p.m. and games can be played casually against playing partners in different strength classes.
This semester, Boulderpoint Leoben was once again the venue for top sporting performances! Namely in the course of the Leoben Academic Bouldering Championships. Coach Nici welcomed a solid 27 participants to this challenging #AllYouCanClimb competition, and they made sure that there was plenty of activity on the mat. In total, there were 15 routes of varying difficulty, which could be climbed a maximum of 22 times per person. Depending on the difficulty of the route, 8, 10 or 12 points were added to one's points account. With this principle, the competition developed into a bouldering marathon, where, in addition to pure climbing skills, the abrasion resistance of the hands was also important.
At the end of the 2 hours, Paula Filzwieser was able to celebrate her first place in the women's category with 836 points (which indicates that she had climbed almost 100 routes!).
In the men's category, Harald Schmid climbed to 1st place with no less than !!!1,674 points!!!, relegating Lukas Bauer (1,534 points) to the well-known 2nd place.
The USI would like to thank all participants for coming, as well as our coach Nici Tsioutsios and the whole Boulderpoint team for their great support.
Here are all the results in detail!
The battle for this year's "USI Strava Challenge" is over!
After the lactate values have returned to normal and all the results have been compiled, we can present you with the final results for both the run/bike and the duathlon classification.
First of all we would like to say that we are very happy about the lively participation and that there will be one or the other segment waiting for you in the future!
As for the competition, it was great and often incredibly close head-to-head races, which were fought out on the segments "Gösser-Radl_Abschnitt (4.48km RUN)" and "Talkönig (3.2km, 273hm)".
RUN:
First place in the men's run segment was unsurprisingly secured by local legend LUKAS BAUER with a time of 15:46, which is a time of !!!! 3:31/km !!!! A clear distance behind, our USI boss Bernd Tauderer secured second place with a 17:24 ahead of ex aequo third Gregor Hueber & Alexander Schaffer (both 17:44).
In the women's race, first place went to Timna Gschwandl, who may have benefited somewhat from the lack of competition.
BIKE:
Quasi at the last minute our USI-internal machine on the bike (Bernd) had to admit defeat to a guest. Mr. Brus (Strava name) defeated the "Talk King" segment just before the end of the Challenge with an 11:25, relegating Bernd to second place by a whole 3 SECONDS, who in turn kept third-placed Christian Gruber (11:34) at bay by 6 seconds.
In the women's classification KATHI MACHNER secured victory with a bombshell time of 12:33 (with which she would also have been in the top field in the men's race) ahead of Marianne M. and Timna Gschwandl.
DUATHLON:
At first glance at the individual results one thing becomes immediately clear....it's close!
And how! With just 4 seconds ahead of Lukas Bauer Bernd Tauderer wins the duathlon (28:52) and brings the victory to USI-Leoben! Christian Gruber came in a strong third with a time of 29:29, which was also well under the 30 minute limit.
In the women's category we can congratulate TIMNA GSCHWANDL on her victory in the run - bike combined!
We congratulate all participants and look forward to more exciting segments in the coming semesters!
